Colony, if any allowance is to be made for sickness, home-leave,

or other contingencies. I am informed, (subject to correction)

that the usual salary for mercantile clerks in Hongkong with

three or four years training in an English office, is from

#250 - 2300, and that a professional man is generally paid at

a higher rate.

I have also to point out thet I paid my own

passage out from England, thereby saving the Government about

£50.

It is for these reasons that I respectfully

apply for an increase to my salary sufficient to enable me to

live in the Colony as hefits an officer of this Department, and

I would further suggest that I may be appointed on to the per-

-manent staff so that I could receive the same consideration as

the other Engineers, when any appointments are made.

As explained to you today, I herewith append

my resignation in order to comply with the conditions of ap-

-pointment (b in letter 109 of 1909) but would be very pleased

to withdraw sanc if the Government would give me the consider-

-ation for which I am now applying, and to which I feel assured,

Sir, you would consider I am entitled.

Trusting that this will receive your favour-

-able consideration and recommendation.

I have etc.,

(sd.) J. E. Piercy.
